Seed Potatoes - Vegetables
Plant from March to May, earth up against frost. Early potatoes need light soil and a warm position, plant second earlies if you don't have this, clay soils are better suited to maincrop. Harvest about 4 months after planting, water well in dry weather.
Potatoes are grown from what are known as "seed potatoes" saved from the previous years crop, they aren't actually seeds. This is a vegetative means of propagation so the resulting potato plants are genetically identical to the parent so giving a true variety. Many of the seed potatoes sold in the UK (and many other countries too) are grown in Scotland and are disease free unlike those you may save from your own crop for the following year.
