Hibiscus are the archetypal tropical looking flowers. Imagine some South Sea Islander with a grass skirt and huge beautiful flower in her hair - now go in a little closer and see what the flower is - it's an Hibiscus!
So the good news is that Hibiscus are extremely beautiful and showy flowers, the even better news is that they're much hardier than you'd imagine and you don't even have to live on a South Sea Island in order to be able to grow them.
They do need a long hot summer in order to flower well however and must always be planted in full sun to be happy. If you do live in a cooler climate, then mulch the roots well in the winter to help protect them from the frost. If you live in a particularly cold environment, they can be grown under glass in a cool greenhouse or conservatory.
