Echinacea, the coneflower is a North American native from the central and eastern dry prairies. They are easy to grow flowers that prefer full sun, though will tolerate some shade, flowering is from mid summer to early autumn.
The large flowers up to 6 inches across are born on erect stems from 3 to 5 feet high, so it's not a shy retiring plant for a discrete position! Cut back the spent stems as blooms fade to keep them coming through the summer.
Readily propagated from seed and also from division of mature plants in spring or autumn or from root cuttings of short sections inserted into potting medium in late fall to early winter - don't disturb again until growth is seen the following spring.
