Dahlias should come with a warning as what starts off as a couple of varieties to fill a gap in the border can progress within a few years to an increasing range with a growing mental list of ones you've seen and would like to get.
There is a huge number of different types that grow from about 45cm to nearly 180cm (18" - 6 feet) with different flower shapes and colours. They grow from tubers that should be lifted in the autumn to be certain they'll make it through the winter though will often survive especially if mulched and the winter isn't too harsh and some varieties are hardier than others. I used to leave some in place but these days I lift them.
